Designing Design Research (G) :

The Green Design Seminar.

Venue:
School of Design & Manufacture,
(De Montfort University),
Leicester.UK.

5th October 1989.

There is concern for the impact on the environment of the modern world. Pollution due to industrial processes is one such aspect. Ozone in the upper atmospehere has been another but where action has had a positive effect. A developing concern is the possibility of 'climate change' through human activity on top of the normal natural causes, such as erupting volcanoes that disrupt environmental conditions from geological time to time. Designers have an instrumental role in the creation of products, services and systems that affect the environment. Sustainablity of a healthy natural world is at the forefront of current issues and designers have some control over of this through specification of designs.

This event brought together some speakers who have a wealth of knowledge and consider these issues, from design researchers and design practioners to representives of Government bodies and Campaign organisations. The day provided some food for thought, mainly to students in the audience, on how they could tackle key matters that impact upon the environment though their designing with an awareness of commercial, social and political notions that as designers they may meet in their careers.

It was a seminal event as one of the first at the time in design academia to resurrect concerns that have been around for a long while in one form or another. There was a call-to-action. 'How far have we come since it?'
